Westbury, overlooked by its White Horse, was famous for its annual sheep fair which was held each year from the 1800s until the Second World War.

The railway has an important junction at Westbury where the main line from London to the West Country meets the north/south routes between the South Coast and Swindon and Bristol. With new housing springing up the station car park has recently been modernised and extended.
