Wool, clothing and brewing helped establish Warminster in the 16th century but the coming of the railway actually saw its economy decline as tradesmen found new markets in Salisbury.   Since the 1930s there has been a sizable military presence in the area.

The station has a frequent service of trains to South Wales, the South Coast as well as trains to London Waterloo.
