Devizes with an area population of 32,062 is the largest population in Wiltshire without a train service. The Berks and Hants line from London to Westbury passes close to Devizes at the crossing of the A342 just 3 miles from Devizes centre. This "Lydeway" location is included in our long term proposals for the station but is dependent on the resolution of the conflict of service issues on the line between a stopping regional service and a fast London to the South West Train service. See also our Mid Wilts service proposals.

News and Events

FGW have negotiated a new franchise deal to 2019. The franchise offers improvement in services with the exception of the Bedwyn diesel shuttle service post electrification to Newbury. However FGW are investigating provision of AT300 bi-modal trains. If authorised there would be 5 x nine car trains and 19 x five cars trains capable of operating Paddington to Penzance. Potentially 5 x five car units would operate as semi-fast trains to Exeter which could stop at Bedwyn. Fast ten car trains operating through services to Plymouth but we would want these services to stop at Westbury. The provision of the semi-fast service could facilitate a future station for Devizes. We will seek to clarify the timetabling of the AT300 service. The latest delays to the electrification programme and the Hendy report will have an impact on these plans.
