Plans have been drawn up to repair the lift which links the subway at Swindon station to platforms 1,2 and 3.

The lift has been out of use since last month and engineers have now decided the large gas cylinders which support the hydraulics have reached the end of their useful life and must be replaced.    This is no easy task however as they need to be hoisted out of the shaft and scaffolding on platform 3 will be needed.   With the electric wires this needs to be scheduled for a time when the overhead system is not energised.

Following site visits it is now planned to complete the work during the second half of August when other engineering work in the area is already planned.

In the meantime dedicated staff are on hand to assist customers with luggage to use the stairs.   Those who cannot use the stairs are being directed via neighbouring stations to return to Swindon’s platform 4 to access the station exit.
