A group of 4-6 year old youngsters braved the wet weekend weather to tidy up the area around Melksham railway station on Saturday (6th June).
The event was organised as part of Community Rail Week. The annual event sees groups across the country organise activities to highlight the work done by volunteers about the railway network.
The children travelled by train from Chippenham courtesy of GWR. They then spent nearly an hour picking litter from the area adjacent to the station and collected four bin bags of rubbish.

The group, members of the Squirrels in the 10th Chippenham Scouts, were led by Angela McCluskie. She said “The children had a great day out, they loved the train, and they are very proud of themselves for ‘helping our world’. That phrase is in our Squirrel Promise, so it gave real meaning to those words.”

Sophie Martin, Community Partnership Manager at TransWilts commented “Despite the incessant rain the children remained smiling throughout. Armed with litter pickers, they worked hard combing the bushes and footpaths looking for discarded rubbish.”
